Speculation about what had happened to Lam was rampant, with some suggesting foul play and others speculating that she had been the victim of a paranormal event. Additionally, an elevator video released by the Los Angeles Police Department showed Lam acting erratically in the hotel’s elevator on the night of her disappearance. Guests at the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, drank, bathed in and brushed their teeth with water from a roof-top tank where a Canadian tourist’s body floated, decomposing, for nearly three weeks. It was not until February 19, however, that Lam’s body was discovered in one of the hotel’s four water tanks. She was last seen alive on January 31, and hotel guests began to complain about low water pressure and a strange taste in the water around February 5. Lam had been traveling alone and had checked into the Cecil Hotel on January 26, 2013. Her disappearance and subsequent discovery caused a media frenzy, with many speculating about the circumstances surrounding her death. On February 19, 2013, the body of 21-year-old Canadian tourist Elisa Lam was found in a water tank atop the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, California.
